Know Your Ingredients: Tea Tree (Melaleuca Alternifloria)

Tea tree oil does not only play a key role in our formula for soothing dry and itchy scalps it has a deep past as an organic product. Tea tree oil is an all-natural ingredient that has a 100-year history of use as a herbal medicine. Tea trees grow along the marshy east coast of Australia and were initially used by the Bundjalung people who populated the area as not only a herbal medicine but also a sanitary product. In the 1920s, researchers first identified tea tree oil as a possible antiseptic. Flash forward to today and tea tree oil is best known for its use as a topical ointment for:

  • Acne
  • Lice
  • Athlete’s foot
  • Nail fungus

Beyond that, it is very common to find tea tree oil as an ingredient in some staple household products like cosmetics, shampoo, massage oil, skin and nail creams as well as laundry detergent. The oil itself is extracted from the leaves of a tea tree through a delicate steam distillation process that ensures its quality. Tea tree oil is used in our products because of its antimicrobial, cleansing and analgesic properties. Those attributes are the reason why it is a key ingredient in our solution for fighting off itchy scalps.
